E-max Veneers — What Are They?
Thin — no thicker than 0.3 mm — plates installed on the front surface of the teeth to correct aesthetic defects.
These micro-prostheses are made from pressed IPS E-max glass-ceramic (lithium disilicate), produced by Ivoclar Vivadent. This material combines:
- The high strength of zirconia — can withstand increased chewing load without chipping;
- The excellent aesthetics of porcelain — the optical properties of the material are almost identical to natural tooth enamel.
Indications for Installation
- Stains, darkening, yellowing of the enamel;
- Chips, cracks;
- Uneven height of front teeth in the smile zone;
- Large gaps between teeth (diastema, tremas);
- Darkened fillings;
- Prevention of enamel wear;
- Inability to whiten a tooth by other means.
Absolute contraindications for the installation of E-max ceramic micro-prostheses include:
- Serious bite abnormalities;
- Bruxism;
- Significant tooth destruction;
- Periodontitis, periodontal disease.

Types of E-max Veneers
Pressed — e.max PRESS
Based on a wax model, a cap is created, on which the dental technician applies IPS e.max Ceram nano-fluoroapatite layering ceramic, layer by layer. The pressing method is then applied using special equipment.
Milled — e.max CAD
The overlay is made from a glass-ceramic blank, which is milled based on a computer 3D model using CAD/CAM technology on a specialized machine. Milled veneers perfectly imitate the anatomy of natural teeth — the fully automated manufacturing process ensures precise fitting to the tooth surface without gaps.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages:
- Excellent aesthetics. The optical characteristics of E-max ceramic are as close as possible to a natural tooth — it reflects and transmits light like natural enamel.
- Minimal enamel reduction. They are very thin and do not require significant enamel preparation. You don't need to get used to them; they are not noticeable.
- Increased strength. They can withstand a load of up to 500 MPa.
- Long service life. They do not lose their original appearance even after 10 years of wear. E-max ceramics are resistant to food dyes and thermal effects.
- Hypoallergenic. IPS E-max ceramics are fully biocompatible, causing no allergic reactions.
Disadvantages:
- Non-repairability. If a chip occurs, a new plate must be installed.
- High cost. They are 2.5 times more expensive than composite veneers.

What to Choose: E.max or Regular Ceramics?
The choice is definitely in favor of E-max — it is the best material in terms of aesthetics, strength, and functionality for veneer production. In my practice (I have been working in aesthetic dentistry for over 7 years), I have stopped using traditional ceramic veneers because they are thicker (a lot of enamel needs to be removed) and they are fragile (high risk of chipping).
Installation
1. Step. First visit. Visual examination and diagnostic imaging
The prosthodontist evaluates the condition of the teeth and determines how many units with aesthetic defects need correction.
Through CT scanning, the doctor rules out any hidden inflammatory processes or defects. If no contraindications are found, a treatment plan is drawn up.
2. Step. Professional oral hygiene
It is recommended to clean off plaque and tartar before installing veneers. Any cavities must be treated.
3. Step. Shade selection
Using computer modeling, the doctor selects the shade of the veneers to ensure they look as natural as possible.
4. Step. Enamel preparation
The doctor removes up to 3 mm of enamel to create space for the ceramic veneer.
5. Step. Taking impressions
Digital impressions are taken using an intraoral scanner, and a 3D model is created. These are sent to the dental lab for the production of E-max ceramic veneers.
While the permanent veneers are being made, the doctor installs temporary composite veneers.
6. Step. Second visit. Installation step
The doctor fits the micro-prosthesis onto the tooth. If no adjustments are needed, the veneer is fixed with dental cement.
Service Life and Care
E-max ceramic veneers last up to 15 years, and with proper care, up to 20 years.
To prolong their service life, follow these rules:
- Brush your teeth twice a day using toothpaste with a low abrasive content (it is recommended to avoid tooth powder).
- Use dental floss and an irrigator for thorough oral hygiene.
- Rinse your mouth after every meal or snack.
- Avoid hard foods (such as nuts or seeds) to prevent chipping.
- Break the habit (if necessary) of chewing on pens or nails.
- Avoid or minimize sticky, chewy foods.
- Visit your dentist at least twice a year for professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar.
Questions and Answers
- Since the veneers are so thin, can you avoid enamel reduction altogether?
No, minimal enamel preparation is always required. Without it, the tooth where the veneer is placed will look unnaturally bulky. Skipping this careful reduction can also result in poor fitting — micro-gaps will form, where food particles can accumulate, increasing the risk of cavities.
- Can E-max veneers darken over time?
This is impossible if the veneer is made accurately and fits tightly to the tooth. Otherwise, due to micro-gaps, the veneer can become stained by food dyes.
- Is it possible to put a veneer on a front tooth without a nerve?
Yes, it is possible. However, for depulped teeth, it is recommended to use ceramic crowns rather than veneers.
- Is there a more affordable alternative to E-max veneers?
Yes, composite veneers. They cost 2.5 times less but are significantly inferior in aesthetics and last three times less.
