If your smile has lost its charm with age and your teeth have become yellowish, the "Kiadent" dental clinic is here to help. Professional teeth whitening can restore their whiteness. This procedure corrects enamel imperfections caused by frequent consumption of coffee, black tea, and smoking. You can lighten the enamel in just one session at the dentist, and the result will last for a long time.
Below are the types of teeth whitening and the benefits of this procedure.
How does teeth whitening work?
Most home and in-office whitening agents contain hydrogen peroxide. When interacting with the tooth surface, the agent releases active oxygen, which penetrates deep into the pores of the enamel and washes out ingrained stains.
Types of Teeth Whitening
At-Home
The procedure is performed by the patient at home using products prescribed by a dentist. The type of whitening gel and application regimen are determined by the dentist after an initial consultation. The gel can be ordered independently or purchased at the clinic. Custom-made trays ensure precise, gentler impact on the gums, reducing gel consumption.
Process: Trays are filled with whitening gel and worn for 15-30 minutes during the day or overnight, depending on the prescribed schedule (daytime or nighttime). If the teeth are unevenly stained (discolored), different amounts of gel can be applied. Treatment duration is 7 days or until the desired result is achieved.
Result: The enamel color lightens by 2-5 shades.
Why at-home teeth whitening may not be the best idea
Dentists do not recommend at-home teeth whitening for several reasons:
- Enamel lightening may be less effective and fail to meet expectations;
- There is a risk of damage to both teeth and soft tissues of the oral cavity;
- Only a qualified dentist can select safe products for the patient, based on a preliminary diagnostic examination.
At-home whitening is possible if prescribed by a doctor, using a tray and special gel.
Professional
The procedure is performed in the clinic under the supervision of a hygienist.
- Chemical whitening — using clinical gel.
- For laser or photo-whitening, a special gel is applied, activated by cold LED light or laser radiation.
Before the procedure, professional oral hygiene is necessary to remove plaque and accumulated tartar.
Which type of whitening to choose?
Both professional and at-home methods can achieve almost the same aesthetic result. However, the clinical procedure has some differences. First, the result is achieved in just one session. Second, it is safer, as the process is controlled by an experienced dental hygienist, reducing the risk of chemical burns to the oral mucosa.
Professional Whitening Methods
Mechanical
This method is one of the simplest and long-established teeth whitening techniques. It includes professional hygiene (CliniPro) — tartar removal with ultrasound, soft deposit removal using Air Flow sandblasting, gradual polishing of the teeth with special pastes, and application of a protective remineralizing varnish.
Air-Flow mechanical cleaning is performed using a special nozzle and a mixture of cleaning powder and water, which includes enzymes, active microgranules, and abrasive components (silicon dioxide, calcium carbonate). The combination of these substances with compressed air allows the film bonding plaque to enamel to be broken down.
The CliniPro method combined with Air Flow restores the natural whiteness of the smile and lightens the enamel by 1-2 shades.
Advantages:
- effective removal of plaque and tartar;
- helps prevent cavities and gum disease;
- the teeth become brighter and regain their natural appearance.
Disadvantages:
- this technique cannot be used frequently, as it may damage tooth enamel density;
- it doesn’t achieve tooth whiteness, but only restores the natural color after removing accumulated plaque.
Chemical
A whitening gel is applied to the tooth surface using a silicone tray. The agent is activated by exposure to air and saliva when in contact with the enamel. Whitening kits are available for both home and clinical use and differ in the concentration of the active substance.
Photo Whitening
This procedure uses special gels that are evenly distributed over the tooth surfaces and activated by UV or LED light. The procedure is carried out in 3 stages, each lasting 30-40 minutes. Each stage includes gel application, activation, and removal of excess.
Systems used:
- Magic Smile
- Flash
- Amazing White
- Zoom 3, Zoom 4
The "Kiadent" dental clinic uses modern photo-whitening systems. These systems are cost-effective, gentler on the enamel, and achieve almost the same effect as Zoom 4.

Questions and Answers
- Does teeth whitening at the dentist hurt?
During the procedure, the patient does not experience pain. Mild discomfort may occur if there are microcracks or enamel chips. Discomfort is possible during professional cleaning, so we recommend applying a local anesthetic to the teeth and gums before the procedure.
- Does teeth whitening damage teeth?
Whitening procedures do not wear down or cause cracks in tooth enamel. However, hydrogen peroxide does alter the mineral composition of the tooth, so remineralization is performed after whitening to restore the enamel.
Additionally, for 2 weeks, it is recommended to follow a calcium- and fluoride-rich diet and use remineralizing products.
- What complications can occur?
Tooth sensitivity to temperature and taste stimuli may increase slightly. Pain may last from 4-5 hours to several days.
To reduce discomfort, it is necessary to use special pastes to reduce enamel sensitivity and avoid acidic and contrasting foods.
- How long does a white smile last?
The result can last for several years with proper oral hygiene. It is also recommended to undergo clinical oral cleaning every six months and, if desired, use home whitening kits (no earlier than 3 months after the clinical procedure and no more than once a year).
- Why do teeth turn yellow?
In some cases, the yellowish color of enamel is hereditary and is associated with the corresponding shade of dentin.
Other causes include:
- Food dyes;
- Smoking;
- Effects of medication;
- Health conditions;
- Poor oral hygiene.
