What Are Dental Braces—How Do They Work?

These are orthodontic fixed appliances for correcting the position of teeth and bite in adults or children. They are also prescribed during preparation for implantation and prosthetics.

Archwire—a steel wire that is secured to the bracket slots. Creates pressure for smooth movement of tooth roots.

Fixation Method

Vestibular

The classic option when the brackets are fixed on the front side of the teeth. Vestibular or external brace systems consist of metal components, as well as more aesthetic ones—sapphire or ceramic. They provide a more precise direction of the archwire. They move teeth more effectively than lingual ones.

Lingual

Located on the inner (lingual) side of the teeth closer to the tongue or palate. They belong to premium-class orthodontic constructions. Lingual braces are usually all-metal and self-ligating (ligature-free).

The lingual system is not noticeable when smiling. The steel archwire does not scratch the lips and cheeks. But more thorough cleaning is required (irrigator).

Type of Brace System Design

All vestibular and lingual braces are divided by design type into ligature and more modern self-ligating:

Ligature

Ligature —standard system in which the archwire is fixed with small rubber rings. The doctor adjusts the ligatures to move the teeth into the desired position. As the bite aligns, the "rubber bands" are replaced with more elastic ones. Replacement of ligatures and steel archwire is carried out exclusively by an orthodontist during monthly visits to the clinic.

Advantages:

Inexpensive.

Disadvantages:

More complicated care. Rubber bands can slip off, break. Requires an additional visit to the orthodontist. In the first days after tightening, they can cause discomfort.

Self-ligating

Self-ligating (passive) braces are modern braces in which special clips or caps with locks are used instead of ligatures. These locks provide certain mobility of the steel archwire and adjust the degree of its tension as the teeth align.

Advantages:

Need to visit the dentist once every 1.5-2 months. More aesthetic, more gently correct the bite. Treatment time is shorter than with ligature braces.

4. Step. Orthodontic Correction

The orthodontist removes the archwire and each bracket separately. Removes the adhesive from the teeth. Installs a retainer on the back surface (an alternative option is a silicone splint to wear at night).

How long do you need to wear a retainer?
As a rule, the retention period lasts 2 times longer than wearing braces. The treatment period is individual; in young patients, it passes faster. The older the patient, the longer the changes occur after bite correction.

How to care for your teeth after installing braces?
- Rinse your mouth after each meal.
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day.
- Use an irrigator and interdental brush to clean hard-to-reach areas.
- Visit the orthodontist for preventive check-ups and comprehensive oral hygiene (once every 3-4 months).
When do teeth start to align in braces?
On average, teeth shift about 1 mm per month. This means that the first changes will be noticeable after 4-6 months.
Do braces damage teeth?
