What Are Dental Braces—How Do They Work?
These are orthodontic fixed appliances for correcting the position of teeth and bite in adults or children. They are also prescribed during preparation for implantation and prosthetics.
- Brackets—non-removable pads fixed on the tooth surface with dental adhesive.
- Archwire—a steel wire that is secured to the bracket slots. Creates pressure for smooth movement of tooth roots.
- Springs, rings, tubes, and ligatures—additional hardware that provides fixation and tension of the archwire.
Types of Braces Depending on the Material
Metal
All elements are made of metal, so they are resistant to wear and overload. Such systems are recommended for serious bite problems (crowding, impacted units). They are noticeable against the enamel background but remain among the most effective.
At the Kiadent Author Prosthetics Clinic, we use proven and reliable brands of metal braces .
Ceramic (Sapphire)
The fixing locks are made of sapphire or ceramic. This material is close in color to tooth enamel, so it is barely noticeable on the teeth. Ceramic minimizes the risk of irritation of the oral mucosa.
Ceramic and sapphire braces look attractive in the mouth, but they are more expensive, require more care, take longer to correct the bite, and are not suitable for all clinical cases.
We offer our clients to install ceramic and sapphire braces .
Combined
In cases when it is impossible to achieve the desired result using only one system, the orthodontist will recommend wearing one of the options of a combined system:
- Molars—metal, canines and incisors—ceramic.
- Upper jaw—ceramic, lower jaw—metal brackets.
We use for combined braces : Damon, Experience.
Which braces to choose?
Our orthodontists select the brace material after assessing the clinical situation and the patient's age. They also find out the patient's preferences, how they see their smile with braces. We can say in advance that metal braces are suitable for almost all patients, and they are strong, reliable, less bulky.
Indications and Contraindications
Indications
- Crowded teeth.
- Diastemas and tremas (interdental spaces).

Even if the dental arch is relatively straight, the bite may be incorrect. In the future, this can lead to enamel wear, dysfunction of the jaw joints, and even snoring.
Come for a consultation to correct your bite without pain and discomfort.
Fixation Method
Vestibular
The classic option when the brackets are fixed on the front side of the teeth. Vestibular or external brace systems consist of metal components, as well as more aesthetic ones—sapphire or ceramic. They provide a more precise direction of the archwire. They move teeth more effectively than lingual ones.
Lingual
Located on the inner (lingual) side of the teeth closer to the tongue or palate. They belong to premium-class orthodontic constructions. Lingual braces are usually all-metal and self-ligating (ligature-free).
The lingual system is not noticeable when smiling. The steel archwire does not scratch the lips and cheeks. But more thorough cleaning is required (irrigator).
Type of Brace System Design
All vestibular and lingual braces are divided by design type into ligature and more modern self-ligating:
Ligature
Ligature —standard system in which the archwire is fixed with small rubber rings. The doctor adjusts the ligatures to move the teeth into the desired position. As the bite aligns, the "rubber bands" are replaced with more elastic ones. Replacement of ligatures and steel archwire is carried out exclusively by an orthodontist during monthly visits to the clinic.
Advantages:
- Inexpensive.
Disadvantages:
- More complicated care. Rubber bands can slip off, break. Requires an additional visit to the orthodontist. In the first days after tightening, they can cause discomfort.
Self-ligating
Self-ligating (passive) braces are modern braces in which special clips or caps with locks are used instead of ligatures. These locks provide certain mobility of the steel archwire and adjust the degree of its tension as the teeth align.
Advantages:
- Need to visit the dentist once every 1.5-2 months. More aesthetic, more gently correct the bite. Treatment time is shorter than with ligature braces.
Disadvantages:
- More expensive than ligature braces.
Installation of Braces on Teeth
1. Step. Preparation. Consultation and Treatment Plan
The doctor examines the dental arch and takes an X-ray. Determines the bite problem, the work of the jaw joints, and diction. Shows the types of braces and helps to choose taking into account cost, functions, and aesthetics. Takes impressions of the dental arch.
🕑 Duration: from 1 day
2. Step. Preparation of the Oral Cavity for Orthodontic Treatment
Before installing the orthodontic appliance, all infection foci are eliminated: carious teeth, tartar, inflammatory gum diseases. Sometimes removal of supernumerary teeth may be required. Immediately before installing braces, professional teeth cleaning is performed.
🕑 Duration: individually
3. Step. Installation and Wearing
Braces are installed in 1 visit per 1 dental arch. At the beginning, the doctor prepares the tooth surfaces with a special gel. Then fixes each bracket with a photopolymer adhesive. After that, secures the steel archwire (on ligatures or clips).
🕑 Duration: 1-3 hours
4. Step. Orthodontic Correction
Ligature—ligatures (rubber bands) need to be changed once a month;
Self-ligating—the steel archwire is replaced once every 1.5-2 months.
5. Step. Removal of Braces and Securing Treatment Results
The orthodontist removes the archwire and each bracket separately. Removes the adhesive from the teeth. Installs a retainer on the back surface (an alternative option is a silicone splint to wear at night).
🕑 Duration: 60 minutes
Wearing period of retainer : 6-24 months.
We recommend
To improve aesthetics, undergo the teeth whitening procedure.
Questions and Answers
- How long do you need to wear a retainer?
As a rule, the retention period lasts 2 times longer than wearing braces. The treatment period is individual; in young patients, it passes faster. The older the patient, the longer the changes occur after bite correction.
The duration of the retention period is influenced by:
- patient's age;
- complexity of the treatment performed; the more changes, the longer the dental arch adapts.
- How to care for your teeth after installing braces?
- Rinse your mouth after each meal.
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day.
- Use an irrigator and interdental brush to clean hard-to-reach areas.
- Visit the orthodontist for preventive check-ups and comprehensive oral hygiene (once every 3-4 months).
- When do teeth start to align in braces?
On average, teeth shift about 1 mm per month. This means that the first changes will be noticeable after 4-6 months.
- Do braces damage teeth?
After removing braces, some patients may have spots on the tooth enamel. This is due to the fact that orthodontic appliances complicate oral hygiene, causing plaque to accumulate around the plates, which can lead to caries.
To avoid this, it is recommended to carefully follow the dentist's recommendations for oral care.
- How soon can the retention appliance be removed?
As a rule, the removal of the construction is carried out in several stages. The non-removable wire can be removed after 2-3 years. Then wearing a splint at night is prescribed. Orthodontists recommend maintaining retention for life.
- How often should you visit the dentist?
Once every six months, a visit to the orthodontist is required for cleaning the dental arch. At the check-up, he will check the degree of fixation, the position of the arch. If necessary, he will adjust or repair the construction.
- Do children need to wear a retainer after braces?
It is mandatory to prevent teeth from returning to their original position after removing braces. However, in a child or teenager, the retention period will take less time.
- What should not be done during wearing?
It is recommended to avoid hard food, do not bite anything to prevent deforming or breaking the metal archwire.
In removable constructions, you cannot eat to avoid breaking them. Also, do not rinse or clean them in hot water to prevent damage.
- How long do you need to wear braces?
The duration of such bite correction ranges from 8 months to 2 years. It all depends on the nature of the problem and the type of system chosen. Treatment on metal brace systems takes less time than on ceramic; on self-ligating systems, treatment is faster than on ligature ones.
- What unpleasant symptoms can occur due to wearing braces?
In the first weeks after installation, the patient may experience the following unpleasant sensations: slight toothache, especially when chewing, irritation of the oral mucous membranes. Usually, the intensity of these symptoms gradually weakens.
- Is it possible to straighten teeth without braces? What are the alternatives?
Other ways to correct malocclusion: aligners, trainers, veneers for front teeth. The choice of treatment method depends on specific indications and is determined by the attending physician.
