What Is a Metal Braces System

A metal braces system consists of:

Stainless titanium brackets—glued to the surface of the teeth;
Orthodontic archwire—exerts pressure on the teeth and moves them in the desired direction;
Tension hardware (rings, hooks, springs, locks)—provide the required tension of the appliance.

Each bracket has a slot through which the orthodontic archwire passes. The appliance is activated by special hardware that is fixed on the distal molars of the dental arch.

Types of Metal Braces

Metal brace systems are classified depending on the method of installation on the teeth and the type of bracket design.

By Installation Method: Vestibular and Lingual

Vestibular—attached to the outer side of the teeth. Visible when smiling, which is the only disadvantage of such constructions.

Lingual—installed on the inner invisible side of the dental arch. Provide good aesthetics and straighten teeth faster. However, lingual appliances are less comfortable to wear, can injure the tongue, and are more expensive than vestibular brace systems.

By Type of Design: Ligature and Self-Ligating

Ligature

In such appliances, each metal bracket is equipped with ligature wings, necessary for attaching elastic or rigid wire ligatures. The ligatures, in turn, secure the orthodontic archwire in the steel plates on the teeth.

Advantages:

Ligature systems are 1.5 times cheaper than self-ligating ones.

Disadvantages:

Longer treatment time, requires more visits to the dentist, elastic ligatures often slip off and break.

Self-Ligating

Designs with a special locking mechanism for attaching the archwire. Self-ligating locks can be active or passive. Active micro-locks press the wire to the bracket slot; passive ones do not exert pressure.

Advantages:

Metal self-ligating appliances are easier to maintain, convenient to use, and reduce the number of visits to the dentist.

Disadvantages:

High price.

Which systems to choose: ligature or self-ligating?

For patients whose budget allows, we recommend orthodontic correction with self-ligating metal systems. In terms of wearing comfort and treatment speed, such constructions are unrivaled. However, they are more expensive, so in some cases, the classic ligature brace system is preferable.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Metal Constructions

Advantages:

The most durable of existing systems, practically never fails
Due to the smooth sliding of the archwire in the slots, they straighten teeth faster than systems made of alternative materials (plastic, ceramic, sapphire)
Suitable for correcting complex bite defects
Cheaper than aesthetic braces

Disadvantages:

Low aesthetics of vestibular-type fixation constructions
Slight metallic taste, higher likelihood of mucosal irritation

Metal or ceramic braces: which are better?

The best system is the one that allows achieving the therapeutic effect while simultaneously satisfying the patient's aesthetic preferences.

If the aesthetics of your smile come first and there are no serious contraindications, choose ceramic . However, if you have a serious bite pathology, engage in active sports, or are limited in budget, metal braces are definitely suitable for you.

Stages of Appliance Installation

1. Step. Preparatory
Includes examination by an orthodontist, X-ray diagnostics, and taking jaw impressions. Based on the obtained data, the doctor individually selects the brace components for the entire treatment period—a timeframe of 1-2 weeks.
Important: During the preparation of the orthodontic appliance, the patient undergoes oral sanitation (caries treatment, tartar removal, tooth polishing).
2. Step. Orthodontic
Installation of metal braces is carried out in two visits—one jaw per visit. During the procedure, the doctor fixes metal brackets on the tooth enamel surface with photopolymer adhesive; after that, additional hardware is installed, and the orthodontic archwire is tensioned.
Every 1-3 months, orthodontic correction is carried out at the clinic (monitoring treatment results, replacing the archwire and ligatures).
Duration of treatment: 6-24 months, depending on the pathology.

The full turnkey treatment cost consists of:

Planning orthodontic treatment (examination, taking impressions, making models).
