Types of ceramic veneers

Feldspathic ceramics (porcelain)

Porcelain veneers imitate the optical properties of natural tooth enamel (color and translucency) perfectly, offering outstanding aesthetics.

Porcelain veneers are made using the following methods:

  • On refractory Porcelain is layered on a refractory base (each layer is baked in a high-temperature furnace) until the desired structure is achieved.
  • Press casting Porcelain is pressed onto a pre-made wax model under high pressure.
  • CAD/CAM technology Veneers are milled from feldspathic ceramic blocks using computer-aided design and manufacturing.

E-max glass ceramics

The best material for making ceramic veneers from Ivoclar Vivadent, combining excellent aesthetics and high strength. There are two types of E.max glass ceramics—E.max Press and E.max CAD.

E.max Press veneers are made using press casting and are extremely strong. They can be made very thin (up to 0.4 mm), minimizing or even eliminating the need to prepare the enamel.

E.max CAD veneers are milled from glass ceramic blocks using a CEREC milling machine (CAD/CAM technology). They are slightly inferior in strength and aesthetics to E.max Press products.

Zirconium dioxide

A sintered porcelain mass is applied to the milled zirconium frame.

Lumineers

The thinnest veneers (only 0.3 mm thick), made by the American company Cerinate using patented technology from durable ceramics. They are installed without tooth preparation.

Doctor's advice

We recommend choosing aesthetic veneers made from E-max ceramics. They are very thin (comparable to Lumineers), gentle on enamel, and highly durable. The material’s rich color palette and degree of transparency allow for an exact match to the patient’s natural tooth color. The best combination of aesthetics and strength. If you are on a tight budget and looking to save, an alternative option is composite veneers.

Advantages and disadvantages of ceramic veneers

Advantages:

  • Long-lasting original color, resistant to staining from food and drinks.
  • Closely resemble natural enamel.
  • Resistant to wear, last 3 times longer than composite veneers.
  • Biocompatible, do not cause allergic reactions.
  • Easy to care for, do not accumulate plaque.

Disadvantages:

  • High cost (compared to composite veneers).

Composite or ceramic—what to choose?

Composite veneers are short-lived, with limitations in design and color, and have a limited lifespan. It’s better to choose ceramic veneers. However, with a limited budget, achieving a beautiful smile with direct composite restoration is still possible.

Ceramic veneers or Lumineers—what’s better?

While Lumineers, in most cases, don’t require enamel preparation, pressed ceramic veneers can also be made thin, minimizing or eliminating the need for preparation. Additionally, you won’t have to wait long for Lumineers to be made (up to 1 month) since they are produced only by Cerinate (USA). In all other aspects, Emax ceramic veneers are comparable to Lumineers.

Contraindications for ceramic veneers

Veneers are contraindicated for patients with:

  • Deep or crossbite;
  • Gaps between teeth larger than 4 mm;
  • Severe crowding of teeth;
  • Bruxism (involuntary teeth grinding);
  • Tooth mobility;
  • Deep caries affecting the root.

Fabrication and installation of ceramic veneers

  • 1. Step. First visit. Initial consultation

    The doctor discusses the patient's concerns and visually inspects the oral cavity to assess oral health and hygiene, as well as to rule out contraindications for veneers.

  • 2. Step. Diagnosis

    We perform CT scans to rule out hidden inflammatory and carious processes, as well as cracks in the roots.

  • 3. Step. Professional cleaning

    The doctor removes plaque and tartar. If aesthetic restoration of incisors and canines requiring therapeutic or endodontic treatment is planned, it is performed mandatorily.

  • 4. Step. Tooth preparation and impression taking

    After enamel reduction, impressions are taken and sent to the dental lab.

  • 5. Step. Temporary veneer placement

    While the permanent ceramic veneers are being fabricated (7 to 14 days), temporary plastic overlays are installed for the patient.

  • 6. Step. Second visit. Veneer installation

    Using special adhesive, the doctor fixes the veneers on the front surface of the teeth and adjusts them (if necessary).

  • 7. Step. Polishing

    The final stage is polishing the teeth, after which the patient enjoys a bright white smile.

Care and prevention

After veneer installation, follow these recommendations:

  • Do not bite or chew hard objects;
  • Do not use teeth to open packages/threads/etc.;
  • Brush your teeth twice a day with a brush and interdental brush, using a soft toothpaste;
  • Have a professional oral cleaning at the dental clinic at least once every six months.

Questions and answers

  • Is tooth preparation necessary?

    Yes, before installing ceramic veneers, we perform gentle enamel preparation. Our prosthodontists always aim to preserve as much of the tooth as possible.

  • Can ceramic veneers be placed on a depulped tooth?

    In the past, the absence of a nerve was an absolute contraindication. Modern aesthetic dentistry allows veneers to be placed on "dead" premolars and canines, but only strictly on an individual basis.

  • Can aesthetic veneers be applied to crooked teeth?

    Yes, but it’s important to understand that veneers do not correct crooked teeth—they only visually hide the misalignment. For proper correction, braces or aligners are needed.

  • Veneers are contraindicated for crooked teeth if:

    There is severe crowding of the front teeth, with one tooth overlapping another;
    Bite abnormalities have developed due to a disease, improper diet, or poor oral hygiene.

  • How many front teeth can veneers be placed on?

    There are no restrictions—it depends on the patient's smile characteristics: for a closed smile, 6 veneers are sufficient, but for an open smile, 10-12 may be necessary.

  • What parameters are important when making veneers?

    Micro-relief Natural teeth do not have a perfectly smooth surface, so the veneer should not be completely smooth either. When making ceramic veneers, we take into account the natural micro-relief of the patient’s premolars and canines.

    Color Natural teeth have an uneven color. For example, the cutting edge is more transparent, and near the gum, they are darker. It is important to incorporate these natural color transitions into the veneers so they look as natural as possible.

    Cutting edge Natural teeth have a more transparent cutting edge, so it’s important for the veneer to also have a translucent cutting edge.

  • Can ceramic veneers come off?

    Yes, they can. There are several reasons. Firstly, the premolar may be affected by caries and therefore the plate installed on it may come off. Secondly, ceramic onlays sometimes come off due to grinding errors. Thirdly, the plate may fall off due to a change in bite. All these moments can be foreseen and eliminated thanks to careful preparation and diagnostics.
