What is gingivitis?
Gingivitis is an inflammatory disease of the gum mucosa characterized by increased bleeding, itching, swelling, and changes in the color and contour of the gums.
The inflammatory process in gingivitis is concentrated in the upper layers of the gum tissue and does not affect other periodontal tissues.
Depending on the severity of symptoms, gingivitis can be acute or chronic, and depending on its spread in the mouth, it can be localized or generalized.
Causes of the disease:
- Dental deposits at the gum-tooth junction (up to 95% of cases are associated with this factor);
- Hormonal imbalances during pregnancy and lactation;
- Weakened immunity, systemic diseases (diabetes, cancer, Crohn's disease);
- Heavy metal poisoning, side effects of medication.
Not far from periodontitis
Without treatment, the infection can affect the tooth-gingival junctions and lead to periodontitis.
Types and symptoms of gingivitis
Catarrhal or simple
Characterized by surface inflammation, redness, and moderate gum bleeding. Catarrhal gingivitis quickly becomes chronic with mild symptoms and periodic flare-ups.
Hypertrophic
Characterized by overgrowth and swelling of the interdental papillae, sometimes accompanied by purulent granulomas. Hypertrophic gingivitis often develops in pregnant women or patients with hormonal imbalances.
Ulcerative-necrotic
A severe form of gingivitis characterized by intense pain, gum bleeding, excessive salivation, a gray-green film on the damaged gum edges, and a foul odor. This disease often occurs in smokers or patients with weakened immunity (as a result of HIV, chemotherapy, etc.).
Atrophic
Characterized by gum recession, exposure of the tooth necks, and disappearance of the interdental papillae. It is commonly seen in elderly individuals or patients with systemic issues.
Doctor’s Advice
To treat hypertrophic, ulcerative-necrotic, and atrophic gingivitis, a more in-depth examination may be necessary to identify the systemic cause. In such cases, dental treatment is carried out in collaboration with an endocrinologist or other specialist.
Professional treatment for gingivitis
The method of treatment is selected depending on the type, stage, and clinical manifestations. A comprehensive approach to gingivitis treatment includes the following stages:
1. Step.
Examination of the patient and, if necessary, further testing to determine the cause of the condition.
2. Step.
Professional oral cleaning. The procedure involves the removal of soft deposits and tartar using an ultrasonic scaler and air polishing, along with protective treatment of the tooth surfaces. This procedure is highly effective in treating gingivitis caused by improper oral hygiene. If plaque is located in the subgingival area, the doctor may prescribe treatment with the Vector device.
3. Step.
Elimination of infection sources in the oral cavity, treatment of carious teeth, removal of decayed roots, and more.
4. Step.
Removal of overhanging parts of fillings, adjustment of improperly placed prosthetic or orthodontic structures (if necessary).
5. Step.
A course of therapeutic rinses. Patients are prescribed home rinses with medications that contain antibacterial and anti-inflammatory components.
6. Step.
Selection of suitable oral care products and training on proper oral hygiene techniques.
7. Step.
In complex cases, antibiotic treatment, hormonal medications, or surgical correction of the gum contour (gingivoplasty) may be required.

Prevention of gum inflammation and bleeding
To prevent gingivitis, it is essential to pay close attention to oral hygiene, which includes:
- Regular brushing at least twice a day with a brush of appropriate stiffness, flossing, and using an irrigator. Proper brushing technique is also crucial.
- Rinsing the mouth with antiseptic solutions—saltwater, hydrogen peroxide, or chlorhexidine-based products (as recommended by your dentist).
- Regular dental check-ups and professional oral cleanings every six months at the clinic.
Preventing gum diseases is also aided by quitting smoking, reducing the intake of sugars and simple carbohydrates, and increasing the amount of fresh vegetables and fruits in your diet.
