Opalescence teeth whitening

Gentle and effective lightening of your smile up to 2-3 tones without using a lamp. Choose in-office or home whitening.

Are you dreaming of a bright, natural smile but concerned about tooth sensitivity and enamel health? At Kiadent dental clinic in Odessa, we offer professional teeth whitening using advanced systems that deliver impressive results while protecting your enamel. This is the ideal choice for those seeking proven technology and the optimal balance between price and quality.

Opalescence teeth whitening: how does it work?

This technology can lighten tooth enamel by 2–3 shades in a single 1–1.5 hour session. The procedure is performed by a dentist or hygienist following a thorough patient examination.

The Opalescence system includes whitening gels for both clinical and at-home use. The active ingredient in these formulations is hydrogen peroxide (or carbamide peroxide) at concentrations ranging from 8% to 40%, which releases a powerful whitening agent — active oxygen — upon oxidation. For in-clinic treatment, the dentist applies the gel to the teeth using a syringe dispenser, while at home, patients use custom silicone trays.

The Opalescence technology is based on chemical teeth whitening — the whitening gel is activated by mixing its components. Importantly, no additional catalyst — laser, LED, or ultraviolet light — is required. This is why Opalescence whitening is one of the gentlest and safest methods available.

A few words about the brand

Opalescence™ is the #1 professional whitening system in the world, with scientifically proven effectiveness and 30 years of clinical experience. The Opalescence brand, created by the American company Ultradent Products, has given a snow-white smile to 100 million people across 125 countries. The technology is recommended by the American Dental Association and other leading dental organizations.

Advantages and disadvantages of Opalescence technology

Advantages

  • High effectiveness. Opalescence gel can lighten tooth enamel by 2–3 shades on the Vita scale in one session.
  • Absolute safety. The lack of light activation prevents pulp overheating and eliminates negative effects on soft tissues compared to laser or UV whitening.
  • Gentle action. The Opalescence whitening gel contains water and remineralizing agents (sodium fluoride, potassium nitrate) that protect the teeth from dehydration and strengthen the enamel during whitening.
  • Affordable price. The service is 1.5–2 times less expensive than Zoom 4 whitening.
  • Wide range of solutions. The system offers products for professional in-clinic use, at-home use, and post-treatment maintenance.

Disadvantages

  • Limited results. The maximum whitening outcome may be slightly less than with the most powerful light-activated systems like Zoom 4, which can lighten the enamel by 3–4 shades.
  • Increased sensitivity. Compared to some modern LED systems, patients may experience slightly higher, though short-lived, tooth sensitivity.

  • Thinned enamel, untreated carious cavities, white spot caries after brace removal.

Stages of Opalescence whitening

The manufacturer provides Opalescence kits for both professional (in-clinic) and at-home whitening.

Professional in-clinic Opalescence Boost whitening

Opalescence Boost PF with 40% hydrogen peroxide is applied professionally in the clinic for 60–90 minutes. Prior to the procedure, oral hygiene is performed to remove deposits.

  • 1. Stage. Preparation and shade assessment

The dentist discusses the desired tooth shade with the patient. The number of gel applications depends on the target color. A photographic protocol is completed to compare the results.

  • 2. Stage. Protection and gel application

A cheek retractor is placed, the teeth surfaces are dried, and the gum margins are protected with a light-cured barrier (Opal Dam) to ensure soft-tissue safety. The dentist mixes the components in a "syringe-in-syringe" manner and evenly applies the gel to the visible tooth surfaces. The product is left on for 20 minutes, then excess is removed with a dental suction, and the teeth are rinsed.

  • 3. Stage. Reapplication and completion

During one session, the gel can be applied up to 3 times for 20 minutes. If further lightening is needed, the procedure can be repeated after a few days.

  • 4. Stage. Final evaluation and recommendations

After the procedure, we evaluate the final result and give detailed aftercare instructions.

Internal whitening (Opalescence Endo)

This method is used when you need to restore the color of a non-vital (dead) tooth. Opalescence Endo (35% hydrogen peroxide) is designed for this purpose.

  • 1. Stage. Preparation

The old filling and root canal filling material are removed from the tooth's canal. The canals are sealed with glass ionomer cement for protection.

  • 2. Stage. Filling and temporary sealing

The tooth cavity is filled with the whitening agent and sealed with a temporary filling.

  • 3. Stage. Gel replacement

The whitening agent is replaced every 3–4 days until the desired result is achieved.

  • 4. Stage. Final sealing

After the whitening is complete, a permanent light-cured composite filling is placed.

Remember the "white diet"

To reduce sensitivity after the procedure, the dentist may recommend using Opalescence UltraEZ remineralizing gel at home. For the first few days after whitening, it's essential to follow a "white diet" (avoid tea, coffee, berries, and other staining foods).

Home whitening

For at-home teeth whitening with Opalescence, special products are available:

  • Opalescence PF (10%, 15%, 20% carbamide peroxide). This gel is used to maintain the results of in-clinic whitening. It is recommended to use with a custom-made reusable tray, fabricated in the clinic according to the patient's dental impressions.

    • Application: the patient wears the tray with the gel for 1–2 hours or overnight. The application protocol is determined individually by the treating dentist.
  • TresWhite Suprem (10%) — a kit containing 10 prefilled standard silicone trays. Designed for 10 one-hour sessions.
  • TresWhite OrthoMint (8%) is intended for lightening the teeth of patients who wear braces.

Which is better — home or in-clinic whitening?

At-home Opalescence whitening is best suited for maintaining the results of a clinical procedure. Before using any whitening product, consult your dentist. They will rule out contraindications and develop a personalized treatment plan.

Opalescence or Zoom?

Compared to the first three generations of Zoom, Opalescence whitening is more affordable, safer, and has fewer contraindications with a comparable clinical result. Zoom 4 technology is free of the drawbacks of earlier generations and outperforms alternative systems in many parameters. However, a significant advantage of Opalescence Boost is its price, which is 1.5 times lower than Zoom 4, with similar effectiveness for most patients.

Opalescence or Amazing White?

Both are chemical whitening systems, with the only difference that to activate the gel in Amazing White, a dental LED lamp is sometimes required. Histological research has proven that the Opalescence system causes minimal sensitivity and fewer structural changes to the teeth. In most cases, it does not require mandatory remineralization of the enamel.

Which whitening system should I choose?

Opalescence is the gold standard in terms of price, effectiveness, safety, and comfort for the patient. If you need a deeper and longer-lasting result, Zoom 4 is an excellent option. On a limited budget, choose Amazing White.

Discussing the choice of a whitening system is best done with your dentist during a clinic consultation.

Questions and answers

  • Does Opalescence whitening cause increased tooth sensitivity?

Some patients may experience increased sensitivity after the procedure. This side effect usually passes within 24 hours. To strengthen the enamel and relieve discomfort, your dentist may recommend home remineralizing products.

  • Do fillings and dental crowns get whitened?

No. Dental restorations and prosthetic structures do not whiten and may become more noticeable after the procedure. To maintain aesthetics, some restorations may need to be replaced. Typically, aesthetic restorations or prosthetics are best done after the whitening treatment.

  • How long do the whitening results last?

The effects last 6–12 months for most patients. However, this is highly individual and depends on the natural properties of the enamel, diet, and habits (smoking, oral hygiene). To maintain the results of your clinical procedure, periodic home whitening with Opalescence products is recommended.
