How Does Air Flow Work?
Air Flow cleaning is a dental procedure that removes soft deposits and pigmented plaque from teeth using a mixture of compressed air, water, and powder (sodium bicarbonate, i.e., baking soda). Air Flow is rarely prescribed as a standalone procedure—only for patients with good oral hygiene and no hard tartar. In most cases, it is combined with ultrasonic teeth cleaning.
The Air Flow system works like a sandblaster. It uses fine Plus powder, which doesn’t damage tooth enamel and gently acts on the soft tissues of the gums. If plaque needs to be removed from the subgingival area of periodontal pockets, a special PerioFlow nozzle is used.
Performed According to Guided Biofilm Therapy Protocol
The Air Flow technology was developed by the Swiss company EMS as part of the internationally recognized Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) protocol for the prevention of caries and periodontal disease.
Air Flow hygiene cleaning is a unique technology for removing biofilms from the tooth surface, with its effectiveness confirmed by numerous randomized studies.

Stages of Professional Air Flow Cleaning at Kiadent Dentistry
1. Step. Examination and consultation
You come to the dental clinic for an initial examination. The dentist assesses the condition of your teeth and gums, the amount of plaque, and excludes any contraindications.
2. Step. Plaque indication
A plaque-detecting substance is applied to the surface of the teeth to highlight the presence of biofilms and small tartar deposits. This helps select the cleaning method and type of powder. Indication is performed in some cases if the dentist sees clinical necessity.
3. Step. Air Flow Procedure
Cleaning of the entire dental arch with the Air Flow machine lasts about 30 minutes. A retractor is placed in the patient’s mouth, their face is covered with a silicone screen to prevent splashes from reaching the eyes, and a plastic medical gown is worn.
If needed, the dentist will remove hard deposits with an ultrasonic scaler afterward. For patients with good oral hygiene or increased tooth sensitivity, ultrasonic cleaning is not required.
4. Step. Remineralization of teeth
To consolidate results and reduce tooth sensitivity, remineralization is performed—saturating the enamel with calcium-containing elements. Remineralization is charged separately and prescribed strictly by the dentist.
After Air-flow cleaning, tooth enamel is polished using pastes and rubber attachments.
Pros and Cons
Advantages
- The Air Flow method effectively destroys bacterial films and soft tooth deposits on the enamel.
- Unlike other cleaning methods, it reaches hard-to-access areas: between teeth and in fissures.
- Removes stains 3 times faster than regular cleaning without damaging enamel.
- Thanks to fine abrasive particles and the water stream, the procedure is painless and recommended for patients with sensitive teeth.
Disadvantages
- The method does not remove hard tartar.
- Not recommended in cases of gum bleeding and inflammation.
Comparison with Ultrasonic Cleaning and ClinPro Technology
Air Flow and ultrasonic cleaning are two different hygiene procedures. The difference is that ultrasound removes hard tartar, while Air Flow removes soft deposits. If the patient has tartar, it is removed first with ultrasound, followed by Air Flow cleaning. Both procedures are typically part of comprehensive oral hygiene.
ClinPro is an alternative air-abrasive cleaning technology developed by the dental giant 3M ESPE. Unlike AirFlow, this method uses a cleaning powder based on glycine (smaller particles + glycerin). The cost of ClinPro hygiene is 2.5 times higher.
Which is better? Air Flow or ClinPro?
For patients who undergo professional cleaning regularly, every six months, we recommend ClinPro cleaning . This technology is gentler on tooth enamel and gums. However, if you need to remove stubborn deposits or smoker's plaque, choose Air Flow, as its more abrasive powder cleans the teeth better.
Post-Cleaning Recommendations
After an Air Flow cleaning, patients should:
- Avoid eating for several hours;
- Replace their toothbrush, ideally with an electric one;
- For the first two days, rinse the mouth with an antiseptic solution (saline, chlorhexidine, hydrogen peroxide), avoid smoking, and exclude coffee and any pigmented products.
Questions and Answers
- How should I prepare for the procedure?
No special preparation is required. If the patient has aggravated gum diseases (gingivitis, periodontitis), these symptoms should be managed first.
- Is the air cleaning procedure painful?
In our clinic, the procedure is comfortable and painless. During the cleaning, patients feel less discomfort than with mechanical or ultrasonic treatments. The procedure does not require anesthesia, but the dentist may apply a local anesthetic spray to relieve any discomfort.
- Are there any side effects?
Like any dental procedure, AirFlow has side effects. These include microdamage to the gums, which according to studies, completely heal within 14 days.
- Does the procedure whiten teeth?
After the procedure, teeth become 1-2 shades lighter. Air Flow whitening is achieved by cleaning the tooth enamel surface from yellowish plaque and pigmented spots. If you want a more significant whitening effect, we recommend professional teeth whitening .
- How often should the procedure be repeated?
To prevent cavities, it is recommended to perform professional oral hygiene every 6 months. If you take good care of your teeth, it’s enough to repeat the procedure once a year.
