What are Aligners?
Aligners are an effective, painless, and aesthetically pleasing technology for correcting misaligned bites.
They are removable, transparent silicone trays made from custom impressions of the mouth. This method of correcting teeth is ideal for patients who are unwilling to compromise their smile’s appearance and are hesitant to use braces.
How much do Aligners Cost?
The cost of aligners for full treatment depends on several factors:
- The complexity of the defect and duration of correction (this determines how many trays are needed for bite correction). Various levels of complexity may require a different number of aligners:
- Minor: 5-7 trays;
- Small: up to 10 trays;
- Medium: up to 20 trays;
- Complex: 21-35 trays.
- Brand choice (for example, aligners from a European manufacturer will be about half the price of the American Invisalign system).
- Preparatory procedures (the patient separately pays for professional oral hygiene, treatment of teeth and gums, and the removal of extra teeth).
Your doctor will calculate the exact cost of aligners after an examination and analysis of your bite anomaly.

Indications and Contraindications
Orthodontic trays (aligners) are recommended for mild to moderate bite pathologies.
They correct defects related to misaligned teeth effectively, but should be used with caution for patients with open, mesial, or distal bites.
Indications
- Diastemas and tremas (gaps between front teeth no more than 4-5 mm).
- Crowded teeth.
- Misaligned teeth (rotated, tilted, or protruding from the dental arch).
- Reverse bite.
Contraindications
- Severe bite pathologies related to jaw displacement.
- Impacted teeth.
- Periodontosis (periodontitis).
- Presence of implants and long bridges in the dental arch.
- Jaw and temporal anomalies that require surgical treatment.
- Children under the age of 9.
Stages of Teeth Alignment with Aligners
1. Step. Examination, Consultation, and Diagnostics
During the consultation, the doctor assesses the condition of the mouth, identifies dental diseases, and rules out contraindications. The following tests are performed:
- Orthopantomogram (panoramic X-ray), cephalometric X-ray, or computed tomography to assess the structure of the jaws, skull bones, and the condition of bone tissue and tooth roots.
- Based on this data, a treatment plan is created.
- Impressions are taken or a 3D scanner is used to scan the jaw.
- A photo protocol is prepared (photos of the patient’s face with and without a smile, profile photos, and intraoral photos).
All data is sent to the aligner manufacturer to create a 3D treatment model.
🕑 Duration: 1.5-2 hours
2. Step. 3D Modelling
A few days later, you return to the clinic where the doctor shows you a 3D computer model, demonstrating step by step how the teeth will shift into the correct position.
If everything is satisfactory, the trays are sent for production.
🕑 Duration: 1 hour
3. Step. Oral Preparation
Before the aligners are placed, all sources of infection in the mouth (cavities, gum inflammation, dental deposits) must be eliminated. Wisdom teeth are removed if necessary.
If there are no dental issues, only professional teeth cleaning (ultrasound, Air Flow or ClinPro, polishing with pastes) is performed.
🕑 Duration: varies
4. Step. Aligner Placement
It takes an average of 7-10 days to manufacture a custom set of aligners. Once ready, you will be invited to the clinic for placement.
During the appointment, the doctor fits the aligners, explains how to use and care for them, and schedules check-up visits.
In some cases, it may be necessary to place small attachments (composite resin bumps) on the teeth.
Treatment: The number of trays in the set depends on the number of steps in the 3D treatment model. Generally, each step requires one tray, which should be worn for 1-2 weeks as instructed by the doctor before switching to the next tray in the set.
🕑 Duration: 1 hour
5. Step. Treatment Progress Monitoring
Every 2-3 months, you visit the clinic for the doctor to assess the progress of the tooth alignment. If necessary, interproximal reduction (polishing the enamel to create space for tooth movement) is performed.
🕑 Duration: 30 minutes
6. Step. Retention Stage
To prevent the teeth from shifting back to their original position, we make a retainer tray, which you must wear during the day or at night (depending on your situation).
The doctor may also recommend a fixed retainer—a metal wire placed on the inner, invisible side of the teeth.
Treatment Duration with Aligners
For moderate dental defects, treatment with aligners typically lasts between 12 and 18 months. Minor defects can be corrected more quickly, in 6-12 months. Visible changes in the tooth alignment can be seen within 3-4 weeks.
The retention stage to solidify the results of the active phase of treatment lasts from 12 to 24 months.
Wear aligners for at least 22 hours a day ☝️
It is important to wear the orthodontic trays for 20-22 hours a day or continuously, removing them only during meals, when consuming hot (staining) beverages, or when brushing your teeth. It is essential to strictly follow the aligner wear schedule, as extended periods without them may affect treatment results.
How Aligners are Made
Custom sets of orthodontic trays are manufactured in specialized facilities according to the following process:
1. Step.
A virtual setup is created based on data received from the dental clinic (calculating aligner parameters and quantity).
2. Step.
The calculations are reviewed by the orthodontist.
3. Step.
3D models of the jaws are printed, corresponding to the micro-movements of specific teeth.
4. Step.
Using the printed models, the silicone trays are manufactured in a vacuum former.
5. Step.
The aligners are trimmed along the contour of the teeth and gums, polished, packaged, and sent to the clinic.
Pros and Cons
Removable systems for bite correction were introduced as an aesthetic alternative to braces. Therefore, we compare the pros and cons of aligners with traditional braces.
Advantages:
- High aesthetics Aligners can be easily removed during meals or important events. Even when worn, they are more aesthetically pleasing than braces.
- Low trauma risk Treatment is painless and does not damage the gums, tongue, or mucous membranes.
- Visualized treatment results Computer 3D modelling allows you to see the final result before treatment begins.
- Ease of care They are easier to maintain compared to the complex care required for metal braces.
- Comfort and convenience while wearing They do not irritate the mucous membranes, do not affect speech, and have no dietary restrictions. You can kiss your loved one with ease.
- Low risk of enamel damage Unlike braces, aligners do not cause surface cavities or enamel stains.
- Hypoallergenic With no metal parts, there is no risk of allergies or a metallic taste in the mouth.
Disadvantages:
Of course, no treatment is perfect, but in this case, the number of drawbacks is minimal:
- Limited use for severe bite defects In complex cases, aligners are ineffective or impractical due to the length of treatment.
- Less treatment control The outcome depends entirely on the patient’s discipline, with minimal involvement from the doctor, making adjustments difficult.
- High cost For moderate and complex defects, the cost of treatment with aligners is higher than with braces.
Increased responsibility for the patient It’s important to
remember to put them on, remove them before eating or drinking hot beverages, and avoid losing them.
- Although aligners can be ordered from our "Kiadent" clinic, for custom orders, you may need to wait for manufacturing.
- In restaurants or cafes, it may be challenging to ensure thorough cleaning of the teeth before replacing the aligners after meals.
Overall, aligners are one of the best methods for improving the condition of the dental arch and can deliver rapid results.
Aligners or braces: which to choose?
Although manufacturers claim that aligners can correct even complex bite pathologies, in some cases, it is not advisable to use them. Treatment may take longer, be more expensive, and less reliable or predictable. In such cases, we recommend that our patients opt for metal or ceramic braces.
Doctor’s advice
It’s difficult to provide a definitive answer to this question. It depends on the clinical situation and specific indications. In general, orthodontics follows this rule: for mild cases, aligners are better because they are cheaper and more comfortable for the patient, while for complex cases, it’s more reasonable to choose braces.
Questions and Answers
- How do aligners work and move teeth?
It is scientifically proven that slight constant pressure on the teeth leads to changes in bone tissue structure. As pressure is applied to one side of the tooth, the bone tissue gradually resorbs, while the opposite side grows.
As the alveolar ridge changes, the teeth move in the desired direction. This pressure is exerted by the silicone trays, which the patient changes periodically during treatment.
- Do teeth need to be removed for aligner treatment?
Yes, in some cases, it may be necessary to remove wisdom teeth to create space for correcting other teeth.
- How do you care for silicone trays and teeth during orthodontic treatment?
Aligners should be removed before eating or drinking (to avoid damaging the trays). After meals, the mouth should be rinsed, and the aligners replaced.
Silicone trays should be brushed and rinsed with warm water (morning and evening). Avoid using hot water to prevent damage to the silicone material.
