What are veneers?
Dental veneers are thin-walled plates that can:
- Correct the shape and defects of teeth;
- Restore the natural beauty and color of the enamel;
- Close small gaps between teeth;
- Visually alter the position of an incisor or canine.
Composite and ceramic veneers are aesthetic micro-prosthetics that attach to the front surface of teeth. They are made from porcelain, zirconium dioxide, ceramics, or photopolymer filling material.
Which teeth can they be applied to?
There are no restrictions—it depends on the visibility of your smile. Some patients only need to install veneers on the front 6 teeth—incisors and canines. Others may benefit from placing 10 plates—on the incisors, canines, and premolars.
Applying these micro-prosthetics to molars is impractical. Even the strongest ceramic plates cannot withstand regular chewing pressure.
For the best aesthetic results, it is recommended to place veneers on both jaws at the same time. Otherwise, one row—upper or lower—may stand out unnaturally against the other.
Which material is better—composite or E-max ceramic?
E-max ceramic veneers are undeniably better. Yes, they are almost twice as expensive, but they are perfect in aesthetics, require no regular polishing, and last almost four times longer. We install zirconium veneers less frequently because they look unnatural (with a matte shade) and require more tooth reduction.
Types of veneers by material
Composite veneers
Advantages:
- Affordable price;
- Fabrication and installation in one day;
- Easy maintenance.
Disadvantages:
- Fragility (compared to other materials);
- Short lifespan (3-5 years);
- Look unnatural (cannot fully replicate anatomical features);
- Quickly lose color and fade (due to food dyes, for example).
Ceramic veneers
Advantages:
- High strength;
- Natural look (optically and physically close to enamel);
- Preservation of tooth tissue (minimal preparation);
- Long-lasting with no color change over time.
Disadvantages:
- Some contraindications;
- Higher cost.
E-max veneers on refractory
Advantages:
- Coating ceramic does not change color over 10-15 years (unaffected by food dyes);
- Strong fixation;
- E-max glass-ceramic plates require no special care;
- Thin material (0.3 mm).
Disadvantages:
- High price.
Zirconium dioxide veneers
Advantages:
- Zirconium dioxide is resistant to temperature changes;
- Lasts 10-15 years;
- Very durable;
- Rarely causes allergic reactions.
Disadvantages:
- Unnatural appearance (matte surface);
- Zirconium frames are difficult to bond.
Veneers or Lumineers: What to choose?
Let’s compare Lumineers with micro-prosthetics on refractory:
Lumineers
- Made using patented porcelain technology.
- Very thin—0.2-0.3 mm.
- Installed without tooth preparation (except in cases of crooked teeth).
- Relative indications for smile correction (it’s hard to maintain natural color due to their transparency).
- Price—starting at 23,000 UAH.
On refractory
- Frameless (made from high-strength coating ceramic).
- Thin, 0.3-0.5 mm.
- For installation, slight enamel preparation is required.
- Provide a natural shade and translucency.
- Price—starting at 16,000 UAH.
Fabrication and installation of veneers
1. Step. Clinic visit
In most cases, you will need to visit the dentist's office at least twice.
2. Step. Oral examination
The doctor listens to the patient’s concerns, gathers medical history, and conducts an instrumental examination of the teeth (evaluating the condition of the mucous membrane and tooth enamel). At this stage, laboratory and radiological studies may also be necessary.
3. Step. Oral preparation
Addressing problems identified during the examination. Dental treatment for caries and other non-carious lesions of tooth tissues. If these issues are not addressed and veneers are placed on caries-affected teeth, it could lead to rapid infection growth.
4. Step. Taking impressions and modeling a beautiful smile
A special paste is applied to a tray, which is pressed against the patient's teeth. The dentist also assesses the individual characteristics of the teeth (shape, position, direction of axes) and helps select the shade of the restorative material.
5. Step. Fabricating the plates in our laboratory
This process takes 7 to 14 days. To achieve precise results, dental technicians use modern microscopes that help ensure maximum edge fit between the veneer and the tooth. As a result, the structure is reliably and securely attached.
6. Step. Installation
The enamel is cleaned of plaque using special agents (fluoride- and oil-free). Under anesthesia, the tooth surface is prepared. The veneer is fixed with special adhesive. The fit is adjusted and the bite is checked.
Indications for veneer installation
Tooth restoration is performed in the following cases:
- Chips and cracks on the enamel or due to severe wear;
- Enlarged gaps between teeth;
- Discoloration of enamel (for example, due to tetracycline antibiotic use);
- Wedge-shaped defects;
- Functional defects after fluorosis treatment;
- Replacing an old veneer.
Advantages and disadvantages of veneers
Advantages:
- Quick fabrication/installation (2-3 visits);
- Minimal maintenance requirements;
- Relatively long lifespan (starting from 3 years);
- Minimal enamel reduction;
- Ability to match material shade to tooth color;
- No discomfort (perfect fit);
- Additional dentin protection.
Disadvantages:
- Non-whitening (if the veneer loses color, it needs to be replaced);
- Irreversible process due to preparation (cannot be removed without replacement);
- Sometimes look unnatural (depends on the specialist and material);
- Tooth tissue damage and caries spread (if improperly installed in low-cost clinics).

Questions and answers
- What is the lifespan of veneers?
Composite—4-5 years, ceramic—5-10 years, zirconium micro-prostheses—10 years, E-Max—10-15 years.
- Is dental treatment or extraction necessary before restoration with this protocol?
Extraction—no. The plates must be attached to a living tooth (this ensures good adhesion).
Treatment—yes. Tooth preparation or etching of the outer layer of enamel (contact surfaces and cutting edges) is required.
- Can removable veneers for front teeth be ordered online?
Today, removable plates made from thermoplastic porous material (softened in hot water before application) can be ordered
. However, such constructions rarely fit securely due to standard sizes, which may not suit everyone, as jaw system parameters are highly individual. We recommend original veneers made in a laboratory using pre-taken impressions. Such micro-prostheses fit securely, last long, and require no special care.
Will they adhere to a toothless jaw?
No. They are installed only on living teeth (this ensures good adhesion). They will not adhere to implants or crowns, as the necessary conditions are not met.
Is it true that teeth become sensitive after veneer installation?
Yes, for the first 7-14 days, there may be a painful reaction to various irritants. This sensitivity typically subsides. During this period, it is recommended to use a special toothpaste for sensitive teeth.
If over time veneers develop pigmented plaque, can they be whitened?
This is a common concern for those who smoke or frequently drink tea/coffee. In such cases, delicate professional cleaning may be performed periodically.
Whitening will not help—the components of whitening gel cannot penetrate the structure of composite, ceramic, or zirconium dioxide.
