Removable Dentures

Aesthetically restore partially or completely lost dental rows

At the Author's Prosthetics Clinic “Kiadent,” you can restore partially or fully lost teeth on the lower or upper jaw with the help of aesthetic removable dentures. Experienced prosthodontists will select the best option to suit your budget.

Indications for Installation

Missing 1–3 teeth

  • Immediate denture (“butterfly”);
  • Partial denture made of nylon.

Missing many teeth

  • Partial acrylic denture;
  • Quadrotti;
  • Partial denture with a metal framework.

Missing all teeth

  • Full plate denture (acrylic or Acry Free);
  • Conditioned-removable denture on implants.

Removable dentures have several significant disadvantages:

  • loss of taste and thermal sensitivity;
  • mobility (may fall out during conversation);
  • bone tissue atrophy.

Therefore, our prosthodontists recommend installing removable orthopedic structures only as a temporary solution before implant-supported prosthetics.

Types of Removable Dentures

Fully Removable Structures

Acrylic

The most popular solution for treating partial or complete edentulism. Service life — up to 4 years.

Advantages:

  • low cost;
  • fast production;
  • good reparability.

Disadvantages:

  • acrylic base covers the palate (reduces taste sensations);
  • rigid gingival base (causes discomfort during the adaptation period);
  • impairs diction;
  • may cause an allergic reaction to the plastic.

Acry Free

A new-generation denture that does not contain acrylic or monomers. The best option for removable prosthetics in cases of partial tooth loss. Service life — up to 7 years.

Advantages:

  • comfortable to wear due to close fit to the gums;
  • resistant to shrinkage and discoloration;
  • more durable than removable acrylic dentures;
  • does not cause allergies.

Disadvantages:

  • twice as expensive as acrylic.

Nylon

An orthopedic product made of soft, elastic polymer. Service life — up to 2 years.

Advantages:

  • hypoallergenic;
  • more aesthetic than acrylic.

Disadvantages:

  • does not fully transfer load to the bone tissue, leading to rapid atrophy;
  • short service life (deforms quickly);
  • absorbs odors;
  • high cost.

Conditioned-Removable

Partial Denture with Metal Framework

Used only for partial edentulism. Secured to the teeth using metal or nylon hooks (clasps) or attachments. Service life — 10 years.

Advantages:

  • covers only part of the palate;
  • distributes chewing load comfortably.

Disadvantages:

  • 2–3 times more expensive than plate dentures.

Quadrotti

Designed for partial tooth loss. Made from elastic plastic (Dental D). Service life — up to 7 years.

Advantages:

  • aesthetic (hooks are barely noticeable);
  • does not cover the palate.

Disadvantages:

  • high production cost;
  • not suitable for all clinical cases.

Acry Free is stronger and more comfortable

For significant tooth loss, it’s better to opt for Acry Free if your budget allows (it costs twice as much as acrylic). Acry Free is hypoallergenic, stronger, and more comfortable to wear.

For partial edentulism in the lower or upper jaw, the best solution is a partial denture with a metal framework.

Supported on Implants

An overdenture with an acrylic or nylon gum base is fixed on 2–6 implants (depending on the clinical case) using snap-on locks.

Advantages:

  • reliable fixation (does not fall out);
  • does not injure the gums;
  • high aesthetics (no hooks);
  • service life is twice as long as analogs.

Disadvantages:

  • long treatment duration (requires 3–6 months for implants to integrate);
  • high cost.

Design

A removable denture consists of three elements:

  • Frame — the base of the structure that supports the product on the prosthetic bed;
  • Base — an artificial gum in which the crowns are embedded;
  • Artificial teeth — made of plastic, metal-ceramics, ceramics, or zirconium dioxide.

Care Tips

  • Clean the denture as you would your teeth — at least twice a day, using a regular toothbrush and toothpaste. When wearing a partial denture, thoroughly clean your natural teeth.
  • Two to three times a week, soak it in a disinfectant solution, such as “Corega,” for 10–15 minutes before bed.
  • Prevent bacteria in your mouth by rinsing after every meal.

How to Adapt to a Removable Denture?

During the first weeks of wearing a denture, follow these tips:

  • Avoid hard and tough foods. This will help prevent pain while chewing. Slice vegetables and fruits into small pieces.
  • Do not remove the denture. Bear with it for up to 4 hours, and the gag reflex will subside. To ease discomfort, suck on candy.
  • To quickly restore normal speech, read aloud daily, gradually increasing rhythm and volume.
  • Drink water in small sips to manage increased salivation.
  • Before bed, after removing the denture, rinse your mouth with chamomile or calendula decoction to reduce inflammation.

Questions and Answers

  • Should it be removed at night?

    Modern removable orthopedic structures can be worn 24/7. However, it is better to remove them to give the mucosa and alveolar ridges a rest. This helps slow down bone resorption.

  • Do hooks (clasps) on removable dentures really wear down healthy tooth enamel?

    Hooks securing the orthopedic structure to supporting teeth are designed to slightly spring and not damage the enamel. If the clasps are made correctly, they cause no harm to the enamel during removal or application.

  • The full removable denture does not fit well on the lower jaw. What can be done?

    Due to the anatomical features of the lower jaw, it is never possible to perfectly fix a removable denture on it. Mobility can be reduced with Corega adhesive. However, the structure will still remain mobile.

    A great solution is to install at least 2 (preferably 4) implants and secure the orthopedic structure on them. Yes, this is more expensive. But considering that you will spend your entire life buying adhesive and enduring discomfort, the choice is obvious.
