What are dental inlays?
A dental inlay is a microprosthesis that restores the lost part of a damaged tooth.
A ceramic inlay is larger and more aesthetically pleasing than a regular dental filling. The shade and structure of the microprosthesis are nearly identical to healthy enamel and dentin.

Types of inlays
Dental inlays are fabricated in dental laboratories from various materials, including metals and zirconium dioxide. Depending on the extent of the tooth tissue damage, inlays are categorized as follows:
- Inlay — placed centrally and does not cover tooth cusps.
- Onlay — extends over the slopes of natural cusps.
- Overlay — completely covers one or more cusps.
- Pinlay — secured inside the tooth cavity using a pin.
A special type of mini prosthesis is a core inlay. This cast product is not used for independent restoration but serves as a base for a future crown, enabling the restoration of almost entirely destroyed teeth.
Which inlay is better?
The choice of a specific type of microprosthesis is made by the dentist. During diagnostics, the dentist evaluates the extent of the tooth damage and the patient's overall condition. At "Light Dentistry" in Moscow, patient preferences and budget are also considered when selecting a product.

Installation process for dental inlays
1. Step. Initial consultation and diagnostics
Determining indications for tooth restoration with an inlay and ruling out contraindications for the microprosthesis.
2. Step. Preparation for prosthetics
Conducting a complete sanitation of the oral cavity and professional dental cleaning (if necessary).
3. Step. Processing
Administering local anesthesia, removing damaged tissue, old fillings, and chipped tooth walls using a dental drill.
4. Step. Taking impressions
Creating a dental mold, selecting the microprosthesis shade, and transferring data to the dental laboratory. A temporary filling is placed to protect the tooth cavity from bacteria during the fabrication period.
5. Step. Fabrication of the microprosthesis
Manufacturing the inlay using professional equipment. The work of the dental technician takes 3-4 days.
6. Step. Trial fitting of the mini prosthesis
Checking the finished product for size, color, and compatibility with tooth tissues. If necessary, the prosthesis is returned to the laboratory for adjustments.
7. Step. Inlay installation
Removing the temporary filling and fixing the completed inlay using dental cement.
Quality Assurance
Our dental procedures are conducted using optical (magnifying) equipment. This approach helps preserve the maximum amount of healthy tooth tissue and extend the lifespan of the restored tooth, provided the root remains intact.
Post-restoration dental care
The microprosthesis does not require special care. During the first 5-7 days after installation, dentists recommend avoiding heavy stress on the restored tooth by excluding hard foods from the diet. After this period, the mini-prosthesis can be used as usual. To extend its service life, adhere to standard hygiene practices:
- Brush your teeth, inner cheeks, and tongue twice daily.
- Clean interdental spaces with dental floss.
- Rinse your mouth with water or a specialized solution after meals.
- Visit your dentist for a check-up every six months.
Questions and Answers
- How long does a microprosthesis last?
A ceramic inlay can last up to 15 years.
- What should I do if the inlay falls out?
You cannot resolve the issue on your own. You should consult your dentist as soon as possible.
- Are there any contraindications?
Restoring a tooth with an inlay is not recommended in cases of systemic caries or if the tooth enamel is pathologically fragile. Ceramic microprostheses are also not suitable for patients with bruxism. In some cases (depending on indications), inlays are not used to restore depulped teeth due to the weakened structure of the hard tissues.
- Can I use an electric toothbrush after inlay placement?
Since the tool generates high-frequency vibrations that may compromise the stability of the prosthesis, using an ultrasonic electric toothbrush is not recommended. As an alternative, an irrigator can be used for daily care. This device effectively removes food debris and plaque, even in hard-to-reach areas.
