Is it possible to put braces on the lower jaw?

YES — braces for the lower jaw are indicated for tooth displacement, crowding, and other bite problems.

In our practice, there have been cases where the upper row looked beautiful, and the problem was only on the lower jaw—two examples below.

During the consultation, our orthodontist will advise you whether it is possible to correct teeth only on the lower jaw or if both need treatment.

How often do patients undergo such treatment?

During consultations, I always tell patients that misalignment of one jaw is often related to problems with the other. Diagnostics often reveal improper occlusion. Or during planning, I see that changing one jaw will lead to a bite disorder. It's better to conduct comprehensive treatment to prevent recurrences.

Braces on the lower jaw for children

Children can have braces placed only on the lower jaw after the eruption of all permanent teeth. After 12 years, a doctor can correct local problems for a child:

  • create space for the eruption of a molar tooth;
  • close interdental gaps (diastema, tremas);
  • align one or several teeth that are growing crookedly;
  • preserve space for permanent teeth if baby teeth were removed early.

Braces on the lower jaw for adults

A doctor can begin such treatment in the following cases:

  • Eliminate mild crowding in the anterior section — up to 6 teeth can be corrected. To make it less noticeable, lingual braces can be used.
  • Close gaps after tooth extraction The doctor will carefully check to ensure that shifting does not lead to gum recession. Correction of the upper row may be required.
  • Prepare for prosthetics or implantation Typically, if one or several teeth are missing.
  • Repeat treatment or relapse Often occurs when the retention period is violated. The doctor may recommend repeat orthodontic treatment

Features of lower teeth correction

In some clinical cases, braces on the lower jaw can be chosen to effectively address specific pathologies. Features of treatment:

  • The lower row is less noticeable when smiling Therefore, more focus can be placed on correction effectiveness
  • The lower jaw is narrower than the upper one There's little space for forming a correct bite. This often leads to crowding or displacement.
  • Treatment with braces on lower teeth can be faster The jaw responds more quickly to load because it adapts better to tooth movement. Also, pathologies are simpler than on the upper jaw.
  • The lower teeth bear more load during chewing or talking Therefore, a durable orthodontic system is required.

How much do braces on the lower jaw cost?

Depending on the complexity of the clinical situation, the orthodontist can offer different treatment options. We understand your concerns, so we offer flexible payment options and only fixed prices for lower jaw braces.

How we install braces on the jaw

  • 1. Step. Consultation and examination

    The orthodontist examines the jaws, assesses the degree of curvature and possible problems. Performs an X-ray to determine the condition of the teeth and tissues. Develops a treatment plan, selects the appropriate type of orthodontic appliance. Takes impressions. Shows the predicted treatment result.

  • 2. Step. Oral cavity preparation

    Performs complete sanitation: treatment of caries, removal of plaque or tartar, eliminates inflammations.

  • 3. Step. Installation of braces and archwire

    Prepares the enamel, grinds if necessary. Installs brackets with photopolymer adhesive. Secures the archwire with ligatures or clips.

  • 4. Step. Adjustments and scheduled check-ups

    Throughout the course, the orthodontist schedules regular visits. Makes adjustments and reactivates the system (tightening the archwire). Monitors the movement of teeth into the correct position.

  • 5. Step. Removal of braces and retainers

    After removal, the doctor fixes a special archwire—a retainer. Necessary to maintain the correct position of the teeth. If needed, makes a night guard for nighttime wear.

Which braces to choose for the lower jaw

  • Metal braces Reliable, durable, and affordable. They are thinner—do not wear down the upper teeth in case of deep bite. Orthodontists recommend metal systems due to their high strength. They withstand heavy loads and are easier to control. We install metal self-ligating braces like Damon, In-Ovation, ligature braces like Victory, or lingual systems like Incognito.
  • Ceramic system Ceramic is more aesthetic—less noticeable compared to metal systems. However, they are not suitable for all clinical cases. Also, treatment takes longer.
  • Combined method Often requires a combination of metal braces on the lower jaw with ceramic on the upper. In the front section, we place aesthetic sapphire systems, and on the lower jaw, durable metal ones for better effectiveness.

When is it better to install lingual braces?

This system is attached to the inner side of the teeth, making them almost invisible when smiling. Typically, they can be placed in cases of crowding, wide interdental gaps, crossbite or open bite. Also, when aligning the midline of the front teeth or incorrect positioning.

Alternative methods of correcting lower teeth bite

  • Transparent aligners We manufacture them individually after scanning the oral cavity. The doctor creates a set of removable trays. They gradually move the teeth. Almost invisible when worn. Can be removed during meals, teeth cleaning. Typically indicated for mild or moderate bite pathologies.
  • Veneers—not an orthodontic method Suitable only for small, localized defects. For example, with diastema, they can also change the size, shape, or color of the teeth.

When is it necessary to install braces on both jaws?

As a rule, the most common bite anomalies require comprehensive treatment:

  • Open bite — occurs when there is no contact between the upper and lower teeth.
  • Deep bite — lower incisors significantly overlap the upper ones. This can lead to wear or damage. In prolonged pathology, an examination of the jaw joint by a gnathologist may be required.
  • Crossbite — the dental arches of the jaws are not aligned horizontally. Can lead to joint movement problems and bite functionality.
  • Overbite or underbite — occurs with excessive protrusion of the jaw backward or forward. Disrupts balance and aesthetics.

Such problems require only comprehensive treatment even if it seems that the teeth are almost perfectly aligned. If braces are installed only on one jaw—the problem may worsen. If you have additional questions—schedule a free consultation.
